The ReSES project is pleased to announce an upcoming seminar on the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. Titled “Can Institutions Explain Poverty and Prosperity?”, this event will take place on 18 November 2024 at the University of Helsinki and will offer insights about the prize-winning work, featuring talks by Jari Eloranta and Matti Mitrunen.

Speakers

Jari Eloranta
Jari Eloranta is a Professor of Economic History at the University of Helsinki. He studies long-run institutional and economic change, as well as the impacts of crises. He has published widely on these topics, with the book Ankarat ajat. Suomalaisten talouskriisien pitkä historia (2024) being the latest.

Matti Mitrunen
Dr. Matti Mitrunen is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Helsinki, in the Discipline of Economics. His research focuses on economic development, broadly defined, with a recent emphasis on the long-term development of the Finnish economy. His work combines causal methods with the collection of historical datasets. Dr. Mitrunen has published research in both Economics and Political Science. He holds a PhD from the IIES at Stockholm University and was previously a postdoctoral researcher at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago.
